Previously the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity, we re-launched as The Children’s Surgery Foundation in 2019 to reflect the national scope of our work today. The story below is from our days as the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity.
Happy Mother's Day to all mums! But spare a thought for the mummies in hospital today with their little ones...
For Mother’s Day we were lucky enough to be able to give a gorgeous gold necklace, hand-engraved 'Live, Love, Laugh', to every mum with a child in hospital at both Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex. This was thanks to our generous new charity partner, Merci Maman. Marine and Emilie from Merci Maman brought more than 150 necklaces in gorgeous gift boxes to give out to mums on the children's wards and neonatal units at both hospitals.
“Having a child in hospital is always hard, but on Mother’s Day it can be terribly difficult,” said Rebecca McLoughlin, Charity Manager. “I know only too well because my own daughter was in hospital here at Chelsea for several months when she was a baby."
“The necklace is beautiful,” said new mum Rachel, whose one-day old baby Sebastian, born at just 32 weeks, was being cared for in the Neonatal Unit at Chelsea and Westminster. “Live, Love, Laugh is my saying! It could not be more perfect.”
Mum Tatty was with George, 12, who has autism and Down's Syndrome. George had surgery on Monday for oesophagitis and was recovering. "The necklace is divine," said Tatty. "Thank you so much! For Mother's Day, I'm hoping for some nice cards, no washing up, and for the family to all be together at home."
"You need days like this to be grateful and realise what's important in life," said mum-of-two Emilie from Merci Maman. "I'm feeling quite emotional. The mums are so strong and the staff here are such angels."
Over the next year, Merci Maman will be helping Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity in many ways, including a donation of 10p from every sale on the website going to our charity. So why not treat yourself to a little something!
