Support for breastfeeding mums

Previously the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity, we re-launched as The Children’s Surgery Foundation in 2019 to reflect the national scope of our work today. The story below is from our days as the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity.

Today is the start of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2017. This year's theme is 'support' and that's certainly something we aim to do as a charity.

To support breastfeeding mums with babies in the Neonatal Unit at Chelsea and Westminster, and the Special Care Baby Unit at West Middlesex, we recently funded extra breast pumps.

Jesse Rose, the Neonatal Matron at Chelsea, says: "We've had very positive feedback from mothers. Before we received the additional pumps from Chelsea Children's Hospital Charity, mums who needed to express breast milk were having to wait for a free, cleaned one. While this caused unnecessary stress and sometimes discomfort for the mothers, it also caused stress for staff who were having to stop what they were doing to clean the pumps the minute they were returned after use. Now that we have additional pumps, mothers are never left waiting for a breast pump and nurses are able to clean the used pumps in batches. Thank you!"
