Helping mums and nurses in NICU
07 Apr ArchivePreviously the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity, we re-launched as The Children’s Surgery Foundation in 2019 to reflect the national scope of our work today. The story below is from our days as the Chelsea Children’s Hospital Charity.
We've funded breast pumps and milk warmers to help mums and nurses in both the Neonatal Unit at Chelsea and Westminster, and the Special Care Baby Unit at West Middlesex. Jesse Rose, the Neonatal Matron at Chelsea, says:
"We have had very positive feedback from mothers. Before we received the additional pumps, mums who needed to express breast milk were having to wait for a free, cleaned one. While this caused unnecessary stress and sometimes discomfort for the mothers, it also caused stress for staff who were having to stop what they were doing to clean the pumps the minute they were returned after use. Now that we have additional pumps, mothers are never left waiting for a breast pump and nurses are able to clean the used pumps in batches.
"The additional bottle warmers supplied by the Children’s Hospital Charity have also been a great help as we now have a bottle warmer in each nursery, making it far quicker to warm the milk. The babies are fed milk that has been warmed to the ideal temperature, ensuring that all the nutrients are retained."
